The personal data we collect and why we collect it

This is a WordPress site. By default WordPress does not collect any personal data about visitors, and only collects the data shown on the User Profile screen from registered users. In order to streamline and enhance your experience, this website does collect some information.

There are some third party plugins involved for the purpose of this collection. These are:

Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a freemium web analytics service offered by Google that tracks and reports website traffic. When visiting our website, Google Analytics allows us to log the IP address used along with the dates and times of access. We use this information to analyze trends (how many people visit us each month), track users movement (see which pages are most popular and how many pages people visit on the site), and gather broad demographic information (the age groups our website is most popular with or what percentage of our visitors are male and what percentage are female). We use this information strictly to improve your experience on the site and to help us market our products to the right audience. Most importantly, any recorded IP addresses are not linked to personally identifiable information. That means we may see that a user is currently on the home page of our site but we cannot identify who he or she is. Other information may be collected as well, such as the source that referred you to our website. Likewise, your duration on our website, and your destination when you leave our website can also be tracked. Other common data collected include the age group you’re part of, the browser you’re using and the type of operating system your computer uses. Again, this is common data collection, and we use it to produce a better experience on our site.

Redirect plugin

A redirect plugin allows us to use a link from our website to send people to a different web page, usually from another website.

Media

While there is currently no option on the site for visitors to upload any images, videos, or audio, should that option be available, please avoid uploading files with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. This is because visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Contact forms

Any visitor or user information that is collected via any of the contact forms on this site is used for the sole purpose of interacting with the users. They are basically simplified ways for you to email us. None of this information is disclosed on any other platforms. When you submit the contact form on the site, both the data on the contact form as well as your IP address is collected for reference.

Cookies

Web cookies are small piece of data sent from a website and stored on your computer by your web browser. Cookies allow us to customize your use of our website and improve your experience. For example when your username and password are remembered by a web site that is done through the use of cookies. They basically allow the site to reflect your actions and preferences. On each page of our website you can check what cookies are in use. If you are using Google Chrome, you simply need to click on the green lock on the left of your website URL and see which cookies are in use:

You can easily make adjustments in your web browser to disable cookies if you choose to do so:

However, refusing cookies may disable some of our website features and reduce its functionality.

If you click on one of our affiliate links, a cookie will be saved in your browser with our ID. That is the way the vendor identifies that you were sent on their sales page from our website. So in the case you purchase one of their products, a commission can be awarded to us. You can delete that cookie if you want. To do that, once you’re on the vendor website, delete all your browser cookies associated with that site and ours.

Do learn how you can disable cookies on different browsers, visit http://www.allaboutcookies.org or https://cookiesandyou.com/

Something else you can do to reduce how much sites are able to track you online is to install the Google Chrome extension called Duck Duck Go. That extension will block all the hidden trackers it can find and will improve your privacy online. For example using Duck Duck Go, if you search about headphones on a search engine they will not be recommended on the homepage when you visit an online store. It may also block our affiliate links so we’re potentially losing money by telling you this

Embedded content from other websites

Our articles and pages may include embedded content (videos, images, articles, podcasts, music, etc). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the same way as if the visitor has visited the other website. For example watching a YouTube video from our website will register as a normal view on YouTube.

Please note these websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and logged in to that website. For example watching a YouTube video on our website will influence the type of content YouTube is going to recommend to you in the future because you were logged into your account and they can track what you watch. That information is beyond our control and becomes subject to the policy that party has in place.

Links to Third Party Websites

In our articles you may find various links for your use and reference (other blogs, , videos, articles, etc). Note that the privacy policies of those websites most likely differ from our own. We are not responsible for their privacy policies.

Your Privacy

The primary reason we collect personal and private information from you is simply to improve the user experience on the site and better serve our customers. We have no reason to share your the data we collect with other parties and will never do it. You own your data and you can ask us to delete all the information we have collected from your visit to our website.

We do not wish to maintain information on our website from those who we actually know are under 18. We do not wish to promote or sell products to minors. Please note that children under 18 are no allowed to use our website or to purchase our products. If you are under 18 and you use our website, you are solely responsible for your actions and are acting against our will.

How long we retain data

If you leave a comment on the site, the comment and its metadata (your email address, the time you posted the comment, the name you used to post the comment) are retained indefinitely. We do that because we want to preserve good questions and answered that are posted on the site throughout the years. However, if you want your comment deleted, you only need to tell us and we will do that for you. Website administrators can see and edit that information.

The email address you use to sign-up to our newsletter (through Sendgrid). That is unless you choose to unsubscribe from the mailing list (you can do that by using the links at the bottom of any email we send you) or you delete your teachable account.

The data Google Analytics collects about your visit on the site (the site you came from, pages visited, time spent on each page, the device used, your age group, etc) are stored for 26 months. Like mentioned before, these are in no way linked to personally identifiable information. We can’t know it was you who visited the site.

The affiliate cookies have different lifespans. For some vendors they live only 60 days (meaning if in 60 days from clicking our affiliate link you end up purchasing the product we sent you to, we are awarded a commission) while for others they live up to one year. For some they may live indefinitely (although that’s not really possible since you will most certainly update our browser or device at least once every few years and those cookies are lost in the process).

Customer purchase records are also retained indefinitely. That is because we want our customers to have lifetime access to the products they purchase. Some people buy one of our products but only use it a few years later. We want them to always have access to it (just like owning a book) and for that we need to retain purchase records.

Your right over your data

You have the right to be forgotten. You can always ask us to delete any and all information that our site or platforms have collected about you. However, this does not include any data we are obligated to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes. If you have an account on this site our our platforms, you can request to receive a file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you on this site.

How we protect your data

Our site uses encryption to prevent data from being leaked to third parties. To protect our mailing lists we use two factor authentication in addition to encryption.

With that said, at the moment we do not have any data breach procedures in place. That means if our sites would somehow get hacked and your information shared through your comments would leak to third parties we do not have a way to get it back from them. Our email lists, customer purchase records, and web analytics are much safer since they are handled by some of the best services in the world such as Google. By paying to use their services the responsibility for keeping our users data safe is transferred to them.

Change Notice

As always, this privacy policy can change without notice and was last updated on March 17th 2020. If your online privacy is important to you, you should save this page and check it frequently because it can change without any notice. All changes will be posted on this page publicly so our visitors are always aware of the updates, as well as the information we collect, how we use it, and under what circumstances (if any), we will disclose it.
